Meet The Trustees

Nick

Erica Thomas

I have been serving as Clerk to Cymar Trustees since the AGM in 2024, and will complete my service at the AGM in September 2026. A lot of my role is about coordination, making sure that everything gets done that needs to be done - organising the trustee meetings, preparing the agenda, drafting minutes, making sure we have all the relevant background information to inform our discernment. I love it! Maybe it is because at heart I am a nosy parker, but I find it so interesting to know what is going on in different parts of our Quaker community, trying to make sure that as trustees we are able to uphold and support the work of Friends in our local and area meetings, as well as Crynwyr Cymru - Quakers in Wales. Trustees seek to be enablers, whilst being to an extent limited by legal requirements - whether within the various Charities Acts or other legislation about Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Data Protection, Equality and so on. None of us are experts, we bring our hearts and minds to our meetings, praying that we may be guided by the Spirit to well discerned decisions and actions.

I also take the lead on a number of threads of work - from Equality and Inclusion, which is my personal passion, to Keeping of Records, via convening our small Insurance sub-group. I need to have a good general knowledge of all our work, but leave the fine details to other trustees in a lot of instances. I am also part of the Finance and Property sub-committees.

I started my life as a trustee for South Wales Area Meeting, and joined the Symud Ymlaen Moving Forward group when it was tasked with all the preparation work for moving to becoming a single charity. It has been a joy to see that work come to fruition, but if anyone asks me to be involved in merging 5 charities into one again in the future, I will decline! Done it once, don't need to do it again. Trusteeship is a joy and a privilege, I wouldn't have missed this experience for anything, thank you Friends for trusting me to take this work forward.

David Harries

I am a longstanding Friend. I have served in various capacities in South Wales and among Friends in Wales, and on Yearly Meeting bodies, including in trustee roles.

I worship at Bridgend Local Meeting and act as Elder there. I have just played a part in drafting some policies in advance of the setting up of Cymar. (Together with Erica and Gerry.) I am Deputy Safeguarding Co-ordinator for South Wales for Cymar. I have just joined the Trustee body.

Gerry Craddock

Hi - I'm Gerry Craddock, I am, at the moment the only North Wales Friend acting as trustee with Cymar, the Quaker charity for Wales and the Southern Marches, where I currently have responsibility for Safeguarding and Health and Safety. I was previously a member of the all Wales group working to set up the charity. I do believe those who are part of an organization should be prepared to help with running it; and I hope my contribution helps with the smooth working of the charity.

I am a farmer's son; and have lived for most of my life in Wales. I worked as a self employed stocktaker and valuer, providing figures for year end accounts and business sales (mainly with pharmacies). I have been a county councillor in Wrexham and a member of Round Table. I am now retired, married with three adult children and 5 grandchildren. I am still active in local politics and enjoy gardening, reading and the theatre; I have also recently taken up learning to play bridge; and enjoy the company of ex Tablers with Wrexham 41Club.

Jeff Glyn-Jones

I am Jeff Glyn-Jones, Brought up in Pentre Saeson, Bwlchgwyn, Nr Wrexham.

Retired Organic Herefordshire dairy farmer, now amateur environmentalist living off grid and as far as possible, trying to be self sufficient. Relatively new member but attender for many years at Almeley Wootton.

Trustee lead for Sustainability and Employment and keen to help members and Quaker Meetings who wish to live lighter on the Earth.

Jeremy Brignell-Thorp

Outside the Quaker world, Jeremy devotes much of his energies to the climate and nature emergencies. Over the last 20 years this has taken various forms including being vegan, promoting community energy projects, promoting electric bikes, attending XR demonstrations, being involved in climate community groups, the latest manifestation of this is being an elected Green Party councillor on Powys council, being a Retrofit Assessor carrying out retrofit surveys under the Green Homes Wales scheme and being active on various community groups..

Jeremy has two grown up sons, plus a step son and daughter of his lovely (second) wife Jenny, and lives near Montgomery, on a very small but steep smallholding which they have re- wilded and grow lots of veg and fruit.

Kay Marshall

Kay Marshall has been a Quaker all her life, her earliest memories are of Sunday school in the old Nottingham Meeting House (ie pre 1961!). She has lived in Dinas Powys near Cardiff since 1994 and is a Member of South Wales Area Meeting (Penarth Local Meeting).

After retirement, she has taken on more Quaker roles, becoming SWAM Treasurer and a Trustee (for the second time) in 2021. She was involved in the Symud Ymlaen process, and became a Trustee of Southern Marches AM as part of the shared Trustees process. She became a Cymar Trustee in June 2025. She believes strong governance sensitively applied should enable the spiritual side of life to flourish, though sufficient Friends heed to help with the former.

Having been involved with property in SWAM, she has taken on the role of co-convenor of the Cymar Property subcommittee and is also on the finance and insurance subcommittees. She enjoys the contact with Friends throughout Cymar.

She is Quaker Prison Chaplain in HMP Cardiff.

Other than Quaker activities and family, her main interest is musical. She comes from a musical family. Her father was a viola and violin maker, as is one of her brothers. Her mother was a piano and music teacher. She plays violin in various orchestras and does much chamber music (the latter for private consumption).

Nick Clapp

I'm a Brightonian who spent over 30 years on the South Coast before relocating to Herefordshire to begin a new chapter. I hold a degree from the University of Portsmouth and bring a background in tech to my varied role, which encompasses managing the Cymar website and email systems alongside my responsibilities as Southern Marches Website Editor, List Editor, and Data Protection Manager.

I am a passionate advocate for peace and environmental issues, and serve as a committee member of The Millichap Peace Fund. When not at my desk, I can often be found enjoying the outdoors or working behind the scenes at the Phoenix Theatre in Ross-on-Wye, where I contribute to set construction and amateur dramatics.

Tricia Bridgewater

I have been a member of North Wales Area Meeting, Wrexham Local Meeting for 15 years. Before that, I was a member of Chester Meeting, just .

I have served as elder, clerk and treasurer of my local meeting, Co-clerk to North Wales AM and Crynwyr Cymru - Quakers in Wales and am now serving as Treasurer for Cymar.

I have worked jointly with trustees, AM treasurers and LM treasurers to manage the transfer of all assets from our previous charities to Cymar, to set up the accounts, the finance systems and policies for the new charity, and to select bookkeepers, accountants, auditors and investment managers. In my role I need a comprehensive overview of all our finance matters but try to get involved in as little detail as possible. Sometimes however that is unavoidable! One key task is that I clerk our Cymar Finance Committee which is responsible for providing good, well informed recommendations to trustees about finance matters.

As treasurer I also sit on the Cymar Property, Investment and Insurance Sub-Committees. The Cymar Treasurer's role is interesting, wide reaching and, along with those of other trustees, pivotal to the success of the charity.
